James Riley (April, 2013)
What does it mean to be a Ram?
For me, being a Ram meant a lot of things. As I grew up playing football in Sherwood Park, playing for the Rams was what we dreamed of. I played for the Eskimos, then the Raiders, and the Rams were the natural progression. However, I learned right away that things in life are never just handed to you because they “should be”. My first year tryout for the Rams would be for the defending provincial champs, led by a stout defense, so my tryout as linebacker would be a tough one. Along with that, thinking I had easily secured a place on the team, I missed one of the tryout practices. This entitled attitude would result in being cut from the team for the 2004 season. This was my first experience with having to try out for a team, and it was a great wake-up call. Up until that point, I didn’t understand that I would have to work hard for things that I wanted. As much as it hurt, that experience as a 13 year old definitely helped shape the person I am today. I took getting cut hard, and didn’t end up playing football that season because there was only one team that I want to play for, the Sherwood Park Rams.
The next season went by and the Rams would repeat as provincial champs with several of my friends on the team. This only fueled my desire to come back and make the team the next year. I came in and was moved around positions until the coaches found a spot for me as receiver. I didn’t care what position they played me at; all I wanted to do was earn a spot on the team. I’m not sure exactly what, but the coaches saw something in me and I got a call from Coach Souster. I’ll never forget that phone call, telling me that I had a lot to work on before the season but I had made the team. It was the first example in my life of how much joy could be attained from hard work, and would not be the last.
Throughout the season we experienced great success, going undefeated through the regular season and into playoffs, en route to a third straight provincial championship. The championship was a culmination of my own personal hard work and the work of our entire team. Just a year removed from playing no football at all, I was a provincial champion. With the Rams I was given a second chance, which is not always available in life. From my experience with the Rams, I understand the importance of seizing opportunities when they come.
As well, the friendships and bonds that were created through the team are always felt. When we graduated, the team was dispersed into the 4 high schools around Sherwood Park. However, the bonds created through the team have lasted for a long time. In fact, the slogan “Once a Ram, Always a Ram helped us share an instant bond over our positive experiences with the Rams, regardless of age differences.
All of these experiences with the Rams have helped to shape the person I have become today, nearly a decade after playing for the team. I am always pleased, and never surprised, to hear the Rams doing so well in the standings. This stems from the dedicated coaching staff that helps to make each player’s experience special. This dedication is appreciated and does not go unnoticed.
